Chief Executive • Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust

The Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust is a not-for-profit educational charity providing archaeology and cultural heritage services to national and local government, NGOs and commercial clients in Wales and England. My role is to lead dynamic change, maintaining core values whilst providing strategic vision and direction for the future. Since 2013.

Principal Consultant • Nexus Heritage

Nexus Heritage is a UK-based for-profit heritage consultancy delivering projects around the world, with a particular focus on Africa and East Asia. My role was to manage and deliver cultural heritage and archaeology projects, including Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Conservation Management Plans (CMPs), international liaison and strategic planning. 2010-2013.

Head of Archaeology and Monuments • Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust

IGMT is a leading independent museum, based in the eponymous World Heritage Site. My role involved a unique blend of curatorial and commercial work. I managed collections (including archaeological sites, buildings and monuments), and helped deliver large-scale building conservation and landscape projects. I also developed commercial specialist industrial heritage consultancy, growing the business to employ over 20 full-time staff. This earned income supported research and conservation projects in the Ironbridge World Heritage Site. 2000-2010.

Project Officer • ARCUS

ARCUS was the commercial archaeological consulting and contracting divison of the University of Sheffield Archaeology Department. Established in 1992, it was at the forefront of the growth of development-driven archaeology in the north of England. In this role I managed, delivered and executed a  wide variety of archaeological projects - specialising in complex urban regeneration schemes involving industrial archaeology and historic buildings. 1995-2000.

Ausgrabungsleiter • Landesamt für Archäologie Sachsen

In the early 1990s the state archaeology service of Sachsen was at the forefront of the great urban regeneration projects cementing the political re-unification of Germany. I worked as supervisor and 'excavation leader' (site director) on projects in Chemnitz and Dresden, principally dealing with complex urban medieval stratigraphy. 1994-1995.

Archaeologist

Field archaeologist / technician and supervisor, leading a peripatetic existence on a wide range of projects. Key employers included: Humberside Archaeology Unit, South Yorkshire Archaeology Field and Research Unit, Trent and Peak Archaeological Trust, the British Museum, the University of Sheffield, the West Heslerton Project and the University of Western Australia. This was an interesting period in the UK, when long-established mechanisms and approaches in archaeology were being challenged by the emergence of development-driven archaeology post-PPG16. Sites ranged from palaeolithic to urban medieval, with some gold torcs along the way. 1989-1994.

Chair of the Board of Trustees • Black Country Living Museum

The Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning independent open-air museum, educational charity and heritage attraction in Dudley. My role is to lead the Trustees to help develop long-term vision and strategy, and to support the CEO and leadership team. My aim is to ensure the diversity and sustainability of the Board for the future. Since 2021.

Trustee • Size of Wales | Maint Cymru

Size of Wales is a charity which provides funding and expertise to local and indigenous communities in tropical regions to help secure their forests and establish sustainable livelihoods. Size of Wales also raises awareness in Wales of the importance of tropical forests and trees in tackling climate change. I am the Trustee lead for HR, acting as mentor to the Director. Since 2020.

Director • Chartered Institute for Archaeologists

The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) is the professional association for archaeologists. I was one of the inaugural Board Members following chartership in 2014. I was closely involved with the international development of CIfA, working to help establish CIfA-Deutschland in 2017-2019 and acting as the official liaison between CIfA and the European Association of Archaeologists. 2014-2020.

Trustee • Black Country Living Museum

The Black Country Living Museum is an award-winning open-air museum and heritage attraction interpreting life and work in one of the world's most heavily industrialised landscapes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As well as the usual duties of a Trustee I was also involved in Trustee and Senior Management recruitment. 2014-2020.

Chair • Historical Metallurgy Society

The Historical Metallurgy Society is diverse forum for archaeometallurgy and related subjects, from prehistory to the present. My term as Chair included the 50th anniversary of the Society, commemorated with a three-day conference at the UCL Institute for Archaeology. 2011-2014.

Director • Institute for Archaeologists

The IFA was the established in the early 1980s in response to the growth of professional archaeology. My tenure on the Board coincided with a pivotal moment in the Institute's development, during the transition towards its new status as the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. 2009-2012.

Trustee • Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology

The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology is Europe’s leading society for the study and promotion of historical archaeology. It was a privilege to serve two terms as a Trustee of the Society during a significant transition from analogue to digital publishing. 2002-2005 and 2008-2011.

Trustee • Historical Metallurgy Society

The Historical Metallurgy Society is a long-established group for all aspects of the history of metals and associated materials. As Trustee I also served as Conservation Officer (2003-2011) and Chair of the Archaeology Committee (2001-2009). 2003-2011.

Chair • Historic Environment Partnership • Brecon Beacons National Park

The Brecon Beacons National Park is creating an Historic Environment Action Plan to support its new Management Plan. My role is to Chair the core partnership group, and to represent heritage on the Stakeholder Reference Panel for the BBNP. Since 2020.

Collections and Learning Committee • Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust

The Committee advises the Ironbridge Gorge Museum on collections care, interpretation and educational programming; it also has oversight of the quinquennial review of buildings and monuments. Since 2019.

Chair • Urban Archaeology Community • European Association of Archaeologists

Chair and co-founder of the EAA Urban Archaeology Community - a forum for discussion of the policy and practice of urban archaeology across Europe and beyond. Since 2017.

Planning Committee • Shrewsbury Civic Society

Specialist sub-committee of this long-established Civic Society, helping to lead public engagement with the planning process. 2015-2017.

Planning, Landscape and Conservation Group • Pontcysyllte World Heritage Site

Multi-agency group reviewing planning policy and practice within the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and Canal World Heritage Site and contributing to WHS Management Plannning. Since 2014.

Secretary • International Practice Group • Chartered Institute for Archaeologists

The CIfA International Practice Group provides a forum for historic environment professionals working on projects and initiatives outside the UK and Republic of Ireland and advises CIfA on issues relevant to international practice of archaeological and cultural heritage management. 2012-2016. 

Validation Committees • Chartered Institute for Archaeologists

Over many years I served on both the CIfA Membership Validation Committee and the CIfA Registered Organisation Validation Committee. I have also served as a panellist in CIfA professional conduct cases. 2009-2018.

Conservation Officer • Historical Metallurgy Society

The Historical Metallurgy Society has a long history of active engagement with the conservation and 'rescue' of threatened metallurgical sites. As Conservation Officer I was responsible for co-ordinating this work. 2003-2011.

Editorial Board • 'Offa's Dyke Journal'

The Offa's Dyke Journal is an open-access journal publishing research on the archaeology, history and heritage of frontiers and borderlands. Founder member of the Editorial Board, contributing and sourcing articles and helping develop direction and scope. 2018-2023.

Reviews Editor • 'The Historic Environment'

The Historic Environment: Policy and Practice is an academic and professional journal published by Taylor and Francis. Responsible for procuring, collating and editing book reviews and review articles. Liaison with editorial team and publishers. 2012-2014.

Assistant Editor • 'Post-Medieval Archaeology'

Post-Medieval Archaeology is an international peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to the study of the heritage and archaeology of the last 500 years. Responsible for managing peer reviewers and other specialists, liaising with publishers and the Editor-in-Chief. 2010-2011.

Postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and mentoring on archaeology, heritage conservation, building conservation and heritage management courses, both on the main campus at Chester and at the University Centre Shrewsbury. 2016-2021.

Honorary Research Fellow • University of Birmingham

Based in the Department of History with Dr Malcolm Dick MBE, and focussed on supporting the Department's research and teaching on early industrialisation and social history. Mentoring, supervision and student support. 2015-2018.

Teaching Fellow • University of York

Formal teaching role within the Department of Archaeology covering study leave for senior staff. Acting Course Director of the MA in Historical Archaeology, and delivering elements of the MA in Landscape Archaeology, along with other undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. 2009-2010.

Visiting Lecturer • University of Bristol

Teaching, marking, supervision and mentoring on the MA in Landscape Archaeology and the MA in Historical Archaeology, working with Dr Dan Hicks in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology. During this period I also directed a series of international field schools in Bermuda, exploring aspects of slavery and the colonial economy. 2002-2007.

Teaching, mentoring and work experience training on postgraduate and professional heritage management courses at the Ironbridge Institute, with Dr Roger White and David de Haan. During this period I also developed and directed a series of international field schools. 2001-2009

I was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in February 2008. Established in 1707, the Society is the oldest learned archaeological body in the world and Fellowship is by closed election.

MCIfA • Member of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists

The Chartered Institute for Archaeologists is the professional association for archaeologists. Membership is through peer-reviewed accreditation which tests ethical and professional competence. I became MCIfA in 2007, and subsequently served as a Director and as a member of various professional committees.
