Leadership of archaeology and cultural heritage projects and organisations. Practical approach to complex ethical, political and social situations. Excellent understanding of governance, management and sustainability issues in private-sector businesses and NGOs. Transformational change.
LEADERSHIP. I have led archaeology and cultural heritage organisations, and large multi-disciplinary teams working on complex projects - both in the UK and internationally. My approach is to try and embed a ‘mission command’ style of working throughout an organisation.
GOVERNANCE. With over 20 years combined experience at Board / NED level, including several years as Chair of a leading independent museum, I have an excellent understanding of private- and third-sector governance - including membership-based professional associations.
ETHICS is about doing the right thing, not just ticking boxes. I have worked over many years to embed ethical approaches into my ways of working as an archaeologist and cultural heritage professional. In 2025 I co-authored (with Gerry Wait) a professional handbook: Ethics in Archaeological Practice, published by Routledge.
PROFESSIONALISM is owning accountability - to regulators, clients, peers and the public. I think deeply about the long-term sustainability and inclusiveness of the archaeology and cultural heritage projects I work on. I have been a full Member of the UK-based Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) for over 20 years, and actively engaged with both with CIfA and the European Association of Archaeologists during that time.
POLICY AND PRACTICE. I have an excellent understanding of regulatory systems, policies and approaches to managing archaeology and cultural heritage in the four nations of the UK. My experience also includes working in mainland Europe, the Americas and Middle East.
ARCHAEOLOGY. With decades of active commercial and research-led fieldwork on archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes, I have expertise in urban archaeology, medieval and post-medieval, industrial archaeology and historic buildings.
CONSERVATION. I have many years' direct experience of managing archaeological sites and monuments, landscapes and historic buildings in a World Heritage Site; as well as wider heritage management leadership and extensive consultancy work. Comprehensive understanding of museum management including large object conservation.
PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT. After decades of work in museums - and leading public engagement and heritage interpretation projects - I have a good understanding of the value of public engagement. I have given numerous public talks and lectures and made several contributions to TV and radio programmes.
